Workshops and classes at FCS24 will be open level, with lots of useful content for everyone from beginners through to advanced dancers.

Workshops

We're incredibly excited to welcome Jo Hoffberg & Felipe Braga to teach for us this year. Their workshops will follow a progression of themes, however each class can be taken independently.

All of Jo and Felipes's classes will be at the Assembly House.

These workshops are only for dancers with full weekend passes.

Three Pillars of Jazz: Part I - The "I"

Saturday 10:00–12:00

Improvisation and the freedom to express yourself. Not just solo jazz, but how to move your body rhythmically, find the groove, and get comfortable dancing without a partner.

Three Pillars of Jazz: Part II - The "Us"

Saturday 14:45-16:45

Swing, coordination, and balance. Connecting the ‘I’ to the ‘we’. Once you’ve found yourself, let’s find a partner and connect through the music. In this class, we’ll focus on one rhythm and learn how to play, explore and improve with it.

Sharing the voice

Sunday 10:00–11:30

The ultimate dancer can both speak and listen. In this class, we’ll create balanced conversations where partners play off each other’s creativity.

Three Pillars of Jazz: Part III - The Music

Sunday 12:00-14:00

Deepening your connection and rhythm. Are you dancing in rhythm? Are you comfortable playing with your rhythm? In this class, we’ll get a pulse on where your rhythm is and ways we can explore.

Culture talk

Jo and Felipe will be talking Lindy Hop culture.

Taster classes

Join some of our talented local teachers for one-off taster classes on a wide range of topics.

These classes are available to anyone with a full weekend pass or a party pass.

Join our local afficionado of all things Americana, DJ and teacher Matt Nunn, for a dip into the social dances of Louisiana. Perfect for the sultry summer evenings we’re having this weekend (!)

Musicality and Play - Paul Claydon

Saturday 15:00-15:45, Chantry Hall

As a swing dance teacher and DJ of national repute, Paul’s musical expertise is second to none. Explore the connection between swing music structures and your dancing to open up a world of creativity.

How to dance with anyone - Sarah Lewis

Saturday 16:00-16:45, Chantry Hall

Drawing on techniques from other partner dance forms (including contact improvisation, blues and tango), this workshop will explore ways to have a fun dance with anyone.

Collegiate Shag - The Shagamuffins

Sunday 11:00-11:45, Chantry Hall

When the tempo goes up there is no substitute for the Shag… Ellen and Rob will show you some simple but sassy moves to dazzle on any dancefloor.

Jazz Tap - Laura Jennings

Sunday 12:00-12:45, Chantry Hall

Add some taps, shuffles and riffs to your Lindy hop and solo jazz with a taster class suitable for beginners. Tap shoes are not required but if you have some, feel free to bring them.

Social Foxtrot - Rhythm and Grace

The clue to Claire Grace’s dance style is in her name! Learn how to sweep effortlessly around the floor when those elegant 1930s dance band tracks come on.
